It’s a headset that plugs into your computer and you can experience virtual reality applications and games. When you turn your head, the camera of the game/application moves so you “feel” as if you are actually immersed into the game/application.

It’s a 3D display with head tracking. It fills your vision with two screens of video games. You don’t walk around with it on, you sit or stand (eventually there will be a small area to walk around in, but I don’t think anyone has actually implemented that yet).

It makes you feel like you’re actually in the game.

Check out a few of the REACT channel videos on YouTube. They let a bunch of people use it and show what they see on the screen. There's even one with old people reacting to it.

Also, I believe you need a relatively high-end PC to run Oculus, and even the developer said that some games you can’t really expect to run at absolute maximum detail settings although it should be more than playable with some settings dialed back.

I think it's an interesting beginning for this kind of tech; to be honest, the starting price doesn't really surprise me. The $350 or so people keep quoting always sounded a bit unreasonable to me for this fancy new tech, but I get why many are upset about the pricing.

The $350 number came about because that’s what the Developer Kit cost and there was a quote that it would be “in the ballpark” of $350. I’m bothered by the poor communication, but ultimately that’s the price they need to charge to get an experience that’s good enough, so it is what it is. From what I understand, they’re even selling these near or below cost.

I had to ask people this too, along with what is 4chan, how to root my android, and I’m a 30 year old engineer. Thought I was a nerd, nope, far from it

Sounds about right; I know the dev (or one of them) did an AmA on reddit yesterday and he seems to admit to the communication errors... I believe he said something along the lines of, "I've learned my lesson... no more ballparks."

It’s a VR display that plugs into your computer - requiring fairly high-end hardware. You don’t “walk around with it” on your head. It’s not like Google Glass or something.

Oculus Rift is a really cool-sounding name for a technology that you neither need nor can afford.

Yeah, they’ve been doing a fantastic job of damage control. I think we’re at the point where most people have accepted that although the price sucks, it’s that high for a reason.

Never ever ever ever ever give somebody a “ballpark figure.” They WILL hold you accountable to a number that, especially in this case with it being early in development, almost never reflects the final price.

People call my company all the time asking for “ballpark figures” for one of our systems. In my department, we don’t even officially know the cost of a system for that exact reason. If I give a customer a “ballpark figure” and then the sales rep quotes them a much different number, that could cost us a sale.

Yep, having done sales, if I don't know the price, I tell them such and that I will let them know once it's concrete. Then there's no he-said-she-said bullshit - the price is the price.
